Former Singapore Transport Minister Sentenced to 12 Months in Prison for Corruption
In a precedent-setting case, former Singapore Transport Minister S. Iswaran has been sentenced to 12 months in jail after being convicted of corruption.
Iswaran pleaded guilty to five charges, including receiving over S$400,000 in gifts from prominent businessman Ong Beng Seng and construction firm boss Lum Kok Seng during his time in office.
The gifts, which included luxury items such as Formula 1 tickets, premium whisky, and other high-value goods, raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest, particularly given his ministerial responsibilities linked to both individuals’ business ventures.
The case also involved a charge of obstruction of justice, after Iswaran attempted to conceal an undeclared private jet trip financed by Ong. The court underscored the critical importance of integrity in public service, especially for high-ranking officials, and consequently imposed a sentence exceeding the prosecution’s initial recommendation.
